Engr. Raufu Aderemi Olaniyan has been tipped favourite to emerge as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC ), in Oyo state. This is according to a survey conducted by an independent body, The Alliance for Business and Political Research (ABPR).
The outcome of the survey obtained exclusively by Sunrisebulletin.com was signed by the Projects and Research coordinator of ABPR, Dr.Oreoluwa A. Micheal. The survey, which took certain critical parameters into consideration, saw Olaniyan, a former Permanent Secretary in the Oyo state public service, emerging tops with 75% of party members across the state backing him to be named candidate of the party after the October 4th primaries.
According to Dr. Michael, in such parameters as experience, competence, accessibility to party members, marketability and political visibility, the Igboho-born politician came out strongest amongst the aspirants of the ADC.
The survey polled responses from the three Senatorial zones of Oyo South, Oyo Central and Oyo North. The report also revealed that Oyo North is the stronghold of the pioneer General Manager of the Oyo state Road Maintenance Agency with over 85% of ADC members saying they would vote to support his candidacy.
Speaking further, Dr. Michael informed that the survey was to ascertain the level of acceptability and popularity of notable aspirants as reckoned by party members of ADC at the grassroot. It also gave an indication about the likely delegates that would participate at the ‘Primaries’ billed for October 4th where a candidate would emerge as the flag bearer of the party and possibly the next governor of the state, if the soaring popularity of the ADC in Oyo state is taken into consideration.
As at the close of sales of nomination forms, 13 aspirants had obtained forms at the cost of six million naira each to face the task ahead. Though all the aspirants are qualified to emerge as gubernatorial candidate of the party, the survey, as conducted by the ABPR, revealed that Remi Olaniyan was in pole position to win the governorship ticket of the ADC as party members indicated interest in the Igboho-born politician.
Though Olaniyan appeared the aspirant to beat in Oke Ogun, 50% of party members in Ibadan, who took part in the survey, are favourably disposed to the aspirant who hails from Oke Ogun. His antecedents while in office, his accessibility to members, his political visibility in the present dispensation and his political astuteness were also among reasons why party members in Ibadan preferred Olaniyan, the survey further stated.
Having obtained the APC nomination and expression of interest forms, the 13 prominent aspirants that are seeking to take over from governor Ajimobi on the platform of Africa Democratic Congress are:
1.Engr. Raufu Aderemi Olaniyan
2. Sen. Gbenga Babalola
3. Dr. Yunus Abiodun Akintunde
4. Amb. Taofeek Oladeji Arapaja
5. Chief Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli
6. Sen. Allahabad Olufemi Lanleyin
7. Mr Ayodele Adigun
8. Engr. Remi Oseni
9. Dr. Nureni Adeniran
10. Mr. Who Opatoki
11. Dr. Muhammad Kola Balogun
12. Chief Lowo Obisesa
13. Hon. Festus Adegoke.
Also, the survey noted that of the 13 aspirants, 10 are from Ibadan, the zone which holds the largest voting population, whilst the remaining 3 have 2 from Oke Ogun and one from Oyo.
“Interacting with ADC party members during the survey, researchers discovered that of all the aspirants, Olaniyan is at the forefront and he is considered to have a better chance above others based on popularity, cognate experience, political affiliation, relationship with party members and his contribution to the development of the Africa Democratic Congress in Oyo state. These criteria were considered paramount in determining who would clinch the ADC guber ticket” stressed Dr. Michael.
Although they all have the same ambition of emerging governor of the state, they however, have different strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
Dr. Oreoluwa Michael said full details of the survey would be made public on the 3rd of October at the ABPR book launch to be held at the Trenchad Hall of the University of Ibadan.
