The executive chairman of Oyo state mineral resource development agency, Mr Abiodun Oni, who also doubles as the chairman of Nigerian Marble Mining Company (NMMC), has held inaugural meeting with the company’s board members, Sunrisebulletin.com reports.
Sunrisebulletin.com gathered that the executive governor of Oyo state, Engr Seyi Makinde, had in May, 2020, constituted and inaugurated the Nigerian Marble Mining Company management board drawing board members from across the state and federal governments, igbeti community, and other critical stakeholders, with the aim of resuscitating and attracting investors to the mining industry in the state as a way of creating economic vibrancy tailored towards improving the state internally generated revenue (IGR).
Mr Oni, while delivering his inaugural speech at the event which held at the conference room of the Oyo state ministry of Justice on Monday, state secretariat Ibadan, said that the history of the marble industry in Igbeti has been very interesting and challenging and assured that with the caliber of members of the company management board, the company is poised to achieve its mandate beyond expectations.
He said that the success of the company is very important and key to the production and development of many industrial initiatives which will boost the economy, promote employment generation, leads to social, cultural, and infrastructural developments as well as the needed revenue boost for the state.
The board chairman explained that with the unfolding development in the industry, investors are already showing serious interests as key players in the industry but stressed that, while focusing on tapping into the economic benefits of the igbeti marble deposit, the board must maintain preservation of health and safety of the people and the environment adding that the company will be the flagship template for the rest of the mining community in the state where people are assured of their safety.
Representative of the federal ministry of mines and steel at the event, Mr Donatus Umar, who is the South West Zonal Mines Officer (ZMO), while speaking with sunrisebulletin.com shortly after the meeting, reiterated the commitment of President Mohammadu Buhari, to fully develop the mining sector in Nigeria revenue hub and to make the sector an employment generating one.
He explained that the FG through the federal ministry of mines and steels is readily available to partner and collaborate with states and all players including local and international players in the sector that are committed to helping the FG government achieve its plan stressing that the federal ministry will continue to give maximum support to the Oyo state government and form a sustainable synergy that will make it easy for the attainment of its plan for the mining sector in the state.
The caretaker chairman of Olorunsogo local government area of Oyo state, Hon David Ayandeyi Ayantunde, earlier in his remark, expressed appreciation to the executive governor of Oyo state, Engr Seyi Makinde, for showing such unprecedented level of commitment towards revamping the igbeti marble site into a revenue spinning venture by constituting the Nigerian Marble Mining Company.
Hon Ayantunde, stressed that the revamping of igbeti marble industry into a viable revenue generating industry will not only put Igbeti on the world map but will also attract physical development, employment generation, as well as positioning Igbeti as investors friendly location in Nigeria.
He lamented that those illegal miners have long shortchanged the fortunes of the state and local governments from collective benefits to individual gains, he however, pledged the support of Olorunsogo local government to the state government, to give maximum support and cooperation to the NMMC board and the state government in order for the board to achieve its mandate.
