By Henry Odeh

The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Tuesday, January 12, announced that Unless the ministry of education gives a contrary directive, the date for resumption of schools remains Monday, January 18.

This was specifically disclosed by the national coordinator of the PTF, Sani Aliu, during a press briefing in Abuja. Aliu noted that the date is to be adhered to in all states, except the ministry deems it fit to change based on the situation of the pandemic in the country.

The PTF’s national coordinator, Sani Aliu, said the date for schools resumption is Monday, January 18

The PTF’s coordinator said: “As regards schools, I just want to make a clarification, what the minister said yesterday was that they were going to review, he didn’t say that they were going to change the date.

He said they will review the situation and let the nation know.

“So, for the moment, it is still 18th January until the ministry of education comes back either with an alternative date or reconfirm that.”

Aliu pointed to increased travels, reopening of businesses, and religious activities without strict compliance to safety protocols as facts that has helped to spread recent infections.

Earlier, the federal government had declared that it would review the January 18 earlier date fixed for resumption of schools across the country.

The government on Monday, January 11, attributed the decision to the second wave of COVID-19 currently ravaging the country. Sunrisebulletin.com gathered that the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this while fielding questions from journalists during a press briefing by the PTF on COVID-19 in Abuja.

The minister said: “On the January 18 resumption date, we are reviewing it. We are going to review it. At the PTF meeting today, we considered it, and tomorrow, the ministry is going to take it up.”
